We adopted a 'consortium' approach to practice based commissioning in 2009-2010. This involves practices regularly meet together in local area groups to review management information and to make suggestions on service changes.
Key benefits
- Spreading information on best practice
- Strength to advise on commissioning changes (average size of a groups patient representation is 31,000)
- Reducing the financial risk of variations in budget within a given year
Consortium groups
The groups are working together on the basis of:
- Loose alignment with local area assemblies (which will enable groups to become involved in joint planning decisions with the council)
- Commissioning sizes of a minimum of 22,000 (average 31,000)
