Learning disability services

Learning disability services in Rotherham are provided jointly by the Council and the NHS.  The Council is the lead provider and lead commissioner for services for adults with a learning disability in Rotherham

NHS Rotherham works closely with the Learning Disability Service to commission:

  • Specialist health services for people with learning disabilities.
  • Better general health services for people with learning disabilities.

This is some of the work we have been doing to improve access to health services for people with learning disabilities in Rotherham:

  • Introduced flagging of health records in the hospital and GP surgeries
  • Learning disability awareness training for over 350 staff including GPs staff from the hospital and Rotherham Community Health Services
  • GP annual health checks for people with learning disabilities
  • Health action plans – people with learning disabilities have been offered a health action plan
  • Hospital communication book – this is a book which will help staff to communicate with people with learning disabilities and includes lots of pictures to help someone with a learning disability explain how they are feeling

How are we doing in Rotherham?

Each year we carry out a Health Assessment for the Strategic Health Authority which rates how well we are doing.

To prepare for the Health Assessment we held ‘Big Health Days’ during 2010.
