Practice based commissioning

Practice based commissioning (PBC) is about involving doctors and other health and primary care professionals in commissioning services.

What is practice based commissioning?

Practice Based Commissioning devolves some responsibility for commissioning services from Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) such as NHS Rotherham to local doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Practices will be given a joint commissioning budget with the responsibility for using to provide services by:

  • Identifying the needs of patients within their area
  • Creating and trialling appropriate health services within their practice
  • Analysing the results of their service changes

Why?

By promoting healthcare commissioning at the practice level (e.g. doctors surgery) the Department of Health sees a number of ways in which patients will benefit:

  • A variety of services
  • A variety of locations that are closer to home and more convenient
