Revellers will be invited to take part in a casino event at a Rotherham nightclub to raise awareness of the importance of practising safe sex.
‘A Licence To Thrill’ will be hosted by Talking Choices in POP nightclub, Ship Hill, Rotherham, on 3rd December to celebrate the end of Rotherham’s second annual Sexual Health Week in partnership with NHS Rotherham and Terrance Higgins Trust.
The event will involve clubbers taking part in a sexual health casino themed activity on the night, where they will be using condoms instead of chips in the aim of raising their awareness of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the importance of practicing safe sex.
This year’s Sexual Health Week takes place 29th November to 3rd December and follows themes such as Chlamydia Monday, Talk about it Tuesday, World Aids Wednesday, Think about it Thursday and Find Out Friday and there are a range of projects, events and activities taking place throughout the week. The aptly named A Licence To Thrill event is one of many organised by Talking Choices - a teenage pregnancy prevention project that aims to promote positive choices in regards to sexual health around Rotherham.
The sexual health casino follows one that took place previously in Middlesbrough as part of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies programme, and will use the same company ‘Corporate Casino’s’ to deal on the night.
Talking Choices Project Coordinator, Kelly Hardy believes that this event will be a good way to end this years’ Sexual Health Week. Kelly and her team will be out in the town centre promoting the event throughout November with quirky ‘A Licence to Thrill’ wristbands which can gain you discounted entry into POP for the event.
Kelly said: “Hopefully the promotion in itself will allow people to think twice about taking those risks and if they come along to the event we will almost certainly make an impact.”
Talking Choices will be working in partnership with Thomas Rotherham College to provide students under the age of 18 with the chance to take part in this event by running an alcohol free session in the afternoon 3pm until 5pm in POP. Terrance Higgins Trust will also be on hand to provide Chlamydia screening throughout the event and welsh film company Filmiau Dolafon are filming the event to produce a DVD which will act as a teaching resource to be left as a legacy after the project ends in March.
