Firefighters compete to be the best cook

22 October 2010

Maltby residents are invited to come along to taste the food and learn how to cook a variety of home-made healthy winter warmers. The cooking competition will take place Wednesday 3rd November between 4.00pm and 6.00pm.

Maltby Fire Station will host a cook off between local fire service watches on Wednesday 3rd November. Firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue will compete against each other to make home-made healthy winter warmers from scratch.

The dishes will be judged by The Earl of Scarborough and Alan Tolhurst, the Chairman of NHS Rotherham. Bonus points will be awarded for using fresh, 5-A-Day portions and low fat ingredients.

Magna Adventure Centre’s own Master Chef, Stephen Harrison will be on hand to oversee the cook off and provide firefighters with some handy tips.

The cooking competition is part of the “Maltby Masterchef” initiative run by NHS Rotherham, and aims to encourage families to make healthier food choices by providing the knowledge and skills to make food that is tasty, healthy and easy to make. The idea is to show that even unhealthy dishes can be turned into quick and simple healthy meals for the family by making it at home and choosing the right ingredients.

The competition will take place on Wednesday 3rd November between 4.00pm and 6.00pm at Maltby Fire Station, High Street, Maltby, Rotherham, S66 8LA.

The Maltby Fire Station cook-off is the second competition in a series of cooking events, which will be held in Maltby from September 2010 to March 2011.

The competitions will be run for participants in a range of age groups, focus on family participation and involve community representatives. The winning meals from each event will be printed onto recipe cards and distributed to local shops and community centres.
