Rotherham GPs are amongst the first 35 clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in the country to apply for authorisation to enable them to assume full statutory responsibilities for health care budgets from April 2013.
Rotherham GPs are in the first of four waves from July 2012 to January 2013. Emerging CCGs have been working with their SHA clusters and the NHS Commissioning Board Authority to agree which application wave they will go into.
The authorisation process will involve surveys with a broad range of stakeholders such as other GPs, health professionals, health and wellbeing boards and patient groups to assess the CCGs readiness for authorisation.
Chair of the Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group Dr David Tooth said;
“We are delighted to be chosen as a first wave CCG to apply for authorisation but this is just the start as we move towards a clinician led and patient focused local health service which supports people in making the right health choices. We are now embarking on a continuous process which will offer patients more information, a greater focus on healthcare outcomes and a greater emphasis on clinical leadership in healthcare decision making”.
The wave process has been established to manage the authorisation of over 200 emerging CCGs. There is no advantage in being part of any particular wave as all CCGs will take on their new commissioning duties, if authorised, on 1 April 2013, regardless of when they were authorised.
