BreathingSpace is a unique facility which offers specialist medical treatment for people in Rotherham who are suffering from a condition known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – you will probably know this as COPD.
What is COPD?
The term COPD covers a group of conditions, which include emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma. These are all lung conditions which, over time, increasingly restrict a person’s ability to breathe.
How do I know if I have COPD?
There are potentially thousands of people in Rotherham who have COPD and don’t realise they have it, as the disease is very gradual. Symptoms of COPD include:
- Feeling out of breath far quicker than normal e.g. after climbing the stairs
- Cough or cold that won’t go away
- Increasing number of chest infections
COPD usually affects people who are over 35 and smokers, ex-smokers, former miners and heavy industry workers are particularly at risk of developing the disease.
If you have any of the above symptoms it is important that you see your doctor to get a correct diagnosis.
How can BreathingSpace help?
BreathingSpace can help patients in Rotherham who are diagnosed with COPD and, depending on the patient’s needs, the support available will include some or all of the following:
- Pulmonary rehabilitation (specialist exercise and education sessions)
- Occupational therapy
- Stop Smoking support
