Drug misuse

Admitting you have a problem with drugs is the first, and biggest, step towards becoming drug free. There's a wide range of services that can help.

Recognising the problem

The first and most difficult step for people who misuse or abuse drugs is to recognise that they have a problem, and then admit that they need help to deal with it. Some people know that they have a problem but find it hard to stop taking the drug, even though they’re aware of the consequences. Others may need someone else to help them realise that they have a problem.
If someone you know has a drug problem all you can do is be there to support then, and encourage them to recognise that they need help. Make it clear that although you’re concerned about them, you still care about them. Facing a drug problem is difficult and takes time. Try to be as patient and calm as you can.

Take the first step

If you, or someone close to you, has a problem with drugs, and would like to seek help, a good place to start is to visit your GP. They can assess you (or the person concerned) and work out what type of treatment is best. Your GP might treat you or you might be referred to your local specialist drug service.
If you do not want to speak to your GP, you can contact the Rotherham Drugs Service directly on 01709 447210.
