Perhaps you're not much of a walker or you just can't see that the everyday task of walking will make much of a difference to your health. If that's you take a look at some walking facts.
1) Get a pedometer
Pedometers can be bought from most local sports retailers or catalogue stores from as little as £2.99.
2) Using your pedometer

- Press the reset button to clear the counter.
- Clip it onto your belt or the waistband of your jeans or skirt mid way between your belly button and your hip. Make sure that it is positioned horizontally, parallel to the ground.
- Start walking!
Wear it around the house, in the office, to school or in the supermarket. You might be surprised how many steps you actually take.
Some pedometers automatically turn off when not in use. Simply start walking to activate it again. Don’t press the reset button before you have noted how many steps you have taken as the button resets the counter to zero.
3) Setup a My NHS account
> Create an account to log your steps in your fitness journal
If you already have a My NHS Rotherham website account there is no need to register again. On to step 4!
4) Uploading your step count
At the end of each week check how many steps the pedometer has counted and return to your account to add your steps to your fitness journal. Check your progress against your own personal walking target for the month and see how your friends, family and colleagues across Rotherham are getting on in our aim to reach the moon!
5) Improving your step count
The recommended number of steps is 10,000 a day. This may be a big target for you so why not visit walking tips for new and easy ways to gradually increase your steps?
